You can reach the centre of Bad Gastein in 10 minutes by walking. The Graukogel lift (a 5-minute walk away) takes you to a height of 2000 m and makes nice mountain hikes and climbs from the mountain station easier.

Within one hour, you can reach Salzburg, the salt mines in Hallein, the ice caves in Werfen, Zell am See, Kaprun or also -- after loading your car on a train to travel through the Tauern Rail Tunnel -- the lakes in Carinthia. Popular destinations are the Salzkammergut and the trip to the Grossglockner (Austria’s highest mountain) or into the dolomites.
